REVIEW
THE HUNT FOR THE RED OCTOBER
by Mark Underwood
The Hunt for the Red October is a submarine simulation based on
the book of the same name, written by Tom Clancy. The story pretty well
follows that of the book, in that the object of the game is to defect to
America with your submarine, 'The Red October'. Your sub is equipped with
all the usual bits'n'pieces, but has one extra, the so-called Catapiller
Drive. This renders the submarine almost totally silent and is the
reason the Americans want to get their hands on your baby.
When I first loaded this came it resulted in many visits to the
Guru. I would get the loading screen, then kaput. I eventually worked
out that the problem was not with the disk, but rather, with the second
disk drive. As this uses some memory even when not in use I had to
disconnect it just to run this program! You will probably have no
problems if you have expanded memory.
In the packaging is a Crew Manual, (aka:-Instruction book), a
Ship Recognition Chart, a Red October Poster and a badge to wear when
you play the game, (it reminds you that you are a crew member).
The instructions are well written and are illustrated with the
use of actual screen photos, so you know what you are getting. There
should be no troubles in this area.
While the game loads you are presented with a digitized picture
of the poster. Very nice it is too, which is just as well as it seems
to take forever to load. When it is all done you are presented with
your control panel and off you go. All controls are accessed by icons
which may lead to further sub menus of icons, and so on.
The main icons are :-
1/ Sonar: used for selecting active sonar, passive sonar, terrain
following or headphones (listen to prop noises etc),
2/ Engines: select propeller or caterpillar drive, and between nuclear
or diesel power,
3/ Weapons: select manual or automatic torpedo steering, and to use flak,
(for decoying torpedoes that are fired at you),
4/ Scope: select normal, attack, or night scope,
and
5/ Maps: shows map of the world, updated at intervals.
There is also a large screen that shows either the periscope view,
sonar view or the contour view, whichever is selected. The contour view
is used to give you a rough idea of the sea depth around you, so you can
run and hide when the nasty Ruskies come after you.
A game clock shows the current time and date. After ten days
you will experience a failure of the nuclear reactor, (part of the plot),
so it is important to make good headway in the early part of the game.
The time can be sped up for those times when nothing is happening.
A nice touch is the fact that there are pull down ship
recognition charts, so you don't need to dig the charts out of the box.
There is also a save game option which makes things a lot easier.
All in all this is a well presented game, which plays easily and
which is graphically nice. The usual digitized sound effects are there,
but are few and far between. I was a little disappointed by the ending,
but that is all that I can gripe about. This game is good value and
good fun.
